of the washington teacher's union, george parker, will both join us live. barry manilow will join us live to talk about his new cd, the greatest love songs of all time. women, don't let ifs, ands or buts say in the way of your dreams. an author will join us. fox 5 morning news is getting started. good morning. we are starting this morning off on a tragic note in rockville where two etro utility workers have been killed. sarah simmons is following this story for us. she will join us live from rockville in just a few minutes. in terms of the temperatures this morning, i'd say a good 30 degrees warmer than they were at this time -- or cooler, colder than they were this time yesterday. >> it is definitely cooler out there. it was 06 yesterday. so dropped quite a bit. -- it was 60 yesterday. so dropped quite a bit.

manhole cover problems. you will find georgia avenue, you got the left lane blocked off in both directions. volume is working in your favor. light traffic volume so no delays at this time f this is typically your ride into work out of wheaton, you may want to think of alternate routes, connecticut avenue, viers mill road, good options for you. quiet at the springfield interchange as you leave newington and springfield headed to the capital beltway. metro's red line, we are now hearing that there -- they have requested shuttle bus service between shady grove and twinbrook now for the ongoing investigation of the overnight accident. shuttle bus service has been requested between shady grove and twinbrook. we'll keep you posted with more information as it becomes available. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. a developing story. another deadly accident on long metro's red line. >> two metro workers were struck and killed over night. this incident apparently not

involving a train but instead utility equipment that travels along the tracks. sarah simmons is live this morning at the scene near the rockville metro station. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. as you can see behind me, this is still a very active scene this. accident occurred about 1:45 this morning p montgomery county police have been out here as well as the ntsb is on the way we understand. this is an investigation that metro is going to be looking into as well as the ntsb. now, montgomery county police have been out here. they have informed us that two metro workers have indeed died. they were hit -- struck by track maintenance equipment. this is near the intersection of maneke street and hungerford drive. police are telling us a 49-year- old man was killed at the scene by the accident. a 68-year-old man taken to the hospital later died of his injuries. they are still investigating trying for figure out what happened. this is not the first incident that metro has had to deal with

here just even within the recent past. it was a near miss situation back in december of 2009. also, in september of last year, there was a metro worker that was killed between -- by a blue line train between the braddock road metrorail station and the ronald reagan national airport station. so questions that will be raised. we will continue to dig into this and bring you more information as it becomes available this morning. back to you. >> thank you. another big story we are following today. we're expecting to hear from schools chancellor michelle rhee about her alarming allegations. she said i got rid of teachers who had hit children, who had had sex with children, who had missed 78 days of school. some city council members call her comments completely inappropriate. they say if these allegations are true, law enforcement

should have been involved. a statement is expected this morning. javaris crittenton will meet with police today. he pleaded guiltiy to misdemeanor gun charge. he said he had a pistol because he feared arenas would shoot him or blow up his car after the two argued. arenas pleaded guilty tie felony gun charge early early this month and will be sentenced in march. police are trying to figure out why this man from virginia had an arsenal of weapons inside his hotel room in new jersey. there was a semiautomatic rifle, a grenade launcher and a night vision scope. police got a tip about a man acting oddly in as a serena store. they followed him. facing public anger over growing deficits, president obama will ask congress to freeze spending over the next thee years. that freeze would begin n 2011. white house officials said that freeze would apply to a

relatively small portion of the budget, pentagon, veterans programs, foreign aid and homeland security would be exempt. we are mourning a local loss in politics. former u.s. senator charles mathias from maryland has died. he was elected in 1960. he champ pend civil rights and protection of the chesapeake bay. family members say he died from complications of parkinson's. he was 87. an argument over a phone comes it a deadly end for the father of figure skater nancy kerrigan. her brother is now charged. u.s. secretary of state hillary clinton deliver as a strong message about haiti. another note on that deadly accident on the red line. shady grove and rockville stations closed because of this horrible accident that happened this morning that left two workers dead. stay with us. you are you are watching fox 5

world will help but ai must lead the way. mrs.clinton says allocating funds properly is key. haiti's prm acknowledged relief efforts have fallen short and said it is still a strug toll save lives two weeks after the quake. to lennon now where officials have ruled out terrorism but say the pilot of the plane that crashed into the mediterranean performed a very fast and strange turn before disappearing from radar. the plane took off in a thunderstorm and went down shortly after in flames. all 90 people on board are feared dead. searchers have recovered more than 20 bodies. the wife of the french ambassador to lebanon was on board. saddam hussein's notorious cousin known as chemical ali was executed by hanging yesrday in iraq. last week, a court convicted him of ordering a poisonous gas tax on a kurdish village in 1998. 5,000 people died. it was the largest chemical weapon as tax on civilians in history. he was also sentenced to death for immediating milary campaigns that killed tens of

thousands of people. the brother of olympic figure skater nancy kerrigan has been charged with assaulting their father who was found dead over the weekend in the family's massachusetts home. mark kerrigan pleaded not guilty to assault. meantime, the family is now awaiting autopsy results to determine exactly what killed 70-year-old daniel kerrigan. police say he was found unconscious hours after getting into a fight with his son. according to court documents, mark kerrigan was once sued by his parents because he hadn't paid them back for taking care of his home while he was serving time in jail for a previous crime. a big debut at dulles airport. >> a new mode of transportation is taking off at dulles international airport. we'll show youthe new aero train. >> cool. also coming up, the latest on today's weather. and julie wright will take a look at traffic.

a beautiful shot outside this morning of the washington monument. it is 15 minutes after 5:00. tony is back with another check on the weather. once we got the rain out of here yesterday, it turned out to be a beautiful day. >> well, yes, it did. and it warmed up quite nicely yesterday afternoon. i do have to say. i'll start by showing you yesterday's high temperatures. we were wrong. i think i told you yesterday morning, the temperatures will fall off. well, they did but not before they warmed up very nicely. reagan national briefly got to 68 degrees. i got to tell you. i was surprised by that. 6 # degrees at reagan national airport. 65 at dulles international. bwi marshall made it up to 66 degrees. fame he going to be wrong, i would rather be wrong this way where our temperatures are much warmer than i thought they

would be. -- 68 degrees at reagan national airport. 41degrees is your current temperature here in d.c. much colder this morning. 36degrees in gaithersburg. 38 at dulles. anassas at 37 degrees. annapolis at 41 degrees at this hour. let's take a look at the satellite-radar. our weather will be much quieter today and much easier to explain because we are between a couple of systems now. we have a mix of clouds and sun this morning although the skies have actually cleared out quite nicely during the last couple of hours. they won't stay that way all day. we'll get more clouds filteing through but we'll go partly sunny today. there will be a fair amount of sunshine. it won't be a bad day at all. all this snow, as u can see, as it gets to the mountains, it evaporates. it doesn't make it over the mountains so wear not going to have that in the forecast for today. this is an upper level low that is moving across up to the north and also some lake effect snows. for us, a quieter day. not as windy without the precipitation. partly sunny, cooler, high about 45 degrees.

a couple of degrees above normal. wind oust west today partly cloudy and cold overnight. lows dropping down into the 30s. and then let's take a look at the five-day forecast because it is of interest. tomorrow, 4 #. that is our normal high. sunshine, a few more clouds build in thursday. then it does look like we've got a pretty good shot at some precipitation in here friday night into saturday day. we do believe it will be snow. how much at this point, can't really say. don't think it will be a major event. but i do think it will be some accumulating snow with our highs only in the 30s. we'll have more details on the weather coming up in just a little bit. steve, back to you. >> we want to go back to our stopper toy this morning. these are -- to our top story this morning. two metro workers were killed in an accident on the red line. this happened near the rockville station. but right now, the rockville and shady grove stations are closed this morning. shuttle gus service is going up

between shady grove and twinbrook. still not sure while the shady grove station is closed but we'll try to figure that one out. >> yeah, i'm not quite sure about that one either unless it is just the start of the line and maybe that is why they're doing that. they have requested shutting busservice for you guys. another story that was in since yesterday afternoon includes the commute along georgia avenue traveling down at pliers mill. that is where we had the hazmat situation. we had the manhole explosion that occurred yesterday around 1:00. left lane is still tied up both north and southbound here. for you guys that normally take this route into work headed down towards the beltway out of wheaton, the left side of the road will be blocked until further notice i'm better bet may to be leave early, plan your trip out on university boulevard or connecticut avenue as alternate routes. 66 nice and clear leaving vienna headed toward the

beltway. d.c. route 295 down at eastern, we've received word of an accident blocking the left lane. that's a checkf your fox 5 on-time traffic. >> thank you. capping a flight at dulles international is getting a little bit easier. the airport is opening its new underground train system. the train has been in the work for years. this morning, sherry ly takes us along fay test ride. >> reporter: nearly 50 years ago, the introduction of mobile lounges at dulles international airport was a modern marvel. now, it is a slow crawl to the gate compared to the arrow train. >> the lounges certainly have a purpose but this is the wave of the future. >> reporter: from zero to 4 # miles per hour, the arrow train takes flyers between terminals a, b and c. ten years in the making, now, it is game day. >> they've been putting up with all of our construction and automatic of our twists and turns for the past eight or 10 years and we are finally hoping up. >> reporter: at peak, trains arrive every two minutes and

can fit 150 passengers comfortably. moving people faster than mobile lounges ever could. if you are runng late for a flight, the new arrow train could make the difference between making that flight or not. >> you've got a better chance. you don't sit there for five minutes waiting for the mobile lounge to take off and, of course, those took about five or six minutes to get to the gate. here, you are second away from it. >> reporter: building the new train system and a new security platform level required digging five stories below ground and tunneling 9,000 feet with business as usual above. >> but if you look at the south end of the airport, you will see about three big mob mountains down there where we actually haul the soil that we excavated from the tunnels and the stayings. >> reporter: the mobile lounges are not extifnght and will be used for arriving international passengers and terminal d. eventual will you, the train system will travel in a loop as the airport adds new concourses and a south terminal.

welce back. young activists in our area are working to help haiti. >> they are elementary school children, little kids with big hearts and as beth parker shows us, they are sacrificing to try to help others. >> reporter: it is spare change that may bring change. >> lets asee how much we have today. twenty, thirty, forty, fifty. >> reporter: these first grader as tend washington mill elementary school in fairfax county but their thoughts are a world away in haiti. >> they need more money to rebuild their houses and stores and hospitals. >> reporter: so the school

started collecting quarters. the idea was to earn the money. >> i made my bed. >> after i'm he done doing the chores, i do some more chores. >> reporter: just step inside the door here and you get a sense of what these kids are learning. think of those in need. they are working on academics but the principal wants to make sure they are also learning to have a heart. >> i don't want to have children leave here as intelligent nasty people. norther do i want hearts and flower people that can't read and make an impact on the road. so it is combining those two things. >> reporter: this fourth grader jumped right in. he hand the principal his bubble gum bank and the money he had been saving for several months. >> she gave me a hug and said thwas sweet. i was thinking of buying a cupel buying a -- buying a couple of things i don't need

we want to go back up to rockville right now for our top story. it will impact the commute for many of you. pretty much anybody who comes in from the north on the red line. two metro workers were killed overnight after an accident that happened on the red line. metro service was not operating at the time but they were doing track work. this happened right here the rockville station. the rockville station on the red line and the shady grove station are both closed this morning. can you not get on at the end

of the red line and you can't get on at rockville. shuttle bus service will go up between shady grove and twinbrook to help get around the issue that is happening red line. we'll check in with julie in just a bit to get the latest from her. >> the moon was really pretty out this morning i noticed. >> we have mostly clear skies. it will be a mild day, not nearly as mild as yesterday but still seasonable for the region. let's take a look. here are the current temperatures in the region across t mid-atlantic and the northeast. 41 here in the district. 42 up in new york city. boston at 43 degrees and pittsburgh is a cold 28 degrees at this hour and raleigh is in the mid-30s. here is a look at the satellite- radar. there is your precipitation that came through yesterday. we've got pretty good snows out to the west in portions of west virginia, ohio, went portions of pennsylvania and some of those regions could see an inch

or two of snow. in additiono that, that snow is blowing around out there well to the west so it will reduce visibility. again, that is not here in the washington area but it is well out to the west. some of our friends in west virginia will encounter that this morning. forecast for us for today, partly sunny. much cooler. we won't see the mid or upper 60s like we did yesterday. today, 45 degrees for your high and it will still be a little bit breezy. more details on the forecast coming up in just a little bit. >> thank you. let's check in with julie and find out what the latest is on the deal with metro. >> good morning to you. you just summed it up. that is what we know. along metro's red line being service has been suspended between shady grove and twinbrook and they have requested shuttle bus service to get you around those stops. for those traveling out of gaithersburg, the service has been suspended. you can pick up the train there leaving the rockville area. this is what we're talking

about from yesterday's commute. this is georgia avenue at plyers mill. you will find the left lane is still blocked both north and southbound. right now, volume is working in our favor. not a lot of people out there on the roads at this time. if you are traveling oust wheaton headed down towards the beltway, you may want to plan on using connecticut avenue or university boulevard as an alternate route. traveling in virginia, lanes are open as you travel east of 50 fair oaks trying to get past 13 back out towards the beltway. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. and we want to go back to that developing story this morning that. deadly accident along metro's red line. two metro workers were struck and killed overnight while performing maintenance work on the track. sarah simmons is live with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. investigators are still out here on the scene and they will likely be here for several hours. we understand the ntsb is on its way and will be out here investigating. we are talking about montgomery

county police who initially responded out here about 1:45 this morning when the crash first happened. they are telling us that it was two track maintenance workers out there on the track doing work when they were struck by a piece of equipment that was out there as well. a large piece of equipment that actually moved trains. police are telling us that it was a 49-year-old man would was killed at the scene. a 6 # -- a 68-year-old man was taken it the hospital and died from his injuries there. this is not the first situation that metro has encountered in the past. there was a near miss situation in december of 2009 and also september of last year, there was a metro worker that was killed by a blue line train while he was out working on some tracks as well and the june 22nd crash that many people are very familiar with. so obviously, they aregoing to be looking into this, digging into this even deeper here as well. at this point, the workers' names, they still have not been

identified. their family members will have to be notified. but as for commuters out there, those who use the shady grove station, also the rockville station, both of those are going to be closed this morning until further notice. we understand there is shuttle bus service intertrying to get up an moving. both of those stations closed at shady grove and rockville as well. back to you. >> thank you. the other big story we are following today, we are expecting to hear from chools chancellor michelle rhee about her arm lag allegations against some of the city teachers who were laid off last october. she said i got rid of teachers who had hit children, who had had sex with children, who had missed 78 days of school. some city council members call her comments completely inappropriate. >> the appropriate way to handle this if it happens is to notify law enforcement and have it investigated. >> this is irresponsible

supreme court ruling has cleared the way if a northern virginia man to die. his name is paul warner powell and he is on virginia's death row. back in 1999, he killed a 16- year-old girl and raped her sister inside their manassas home. yesterday, the supreme court refused to hear his appeal. how close do you keep your cell phone at night. one illinois tamer dozed off while texting and woke up to a hole in her blanket and burns on her stomach. both were caused by the phone. at&t is the phone's manufacturer. the company is looking into the issue. change is on the way for tourists at the national archives. starting sometime next month, you won't be able to take pictures inside the main exhibit hall. the museum says it is aimed at observing the declaration of independence and other important documents.
